Jonathan Wilson has written a fantastic piece that sheds light on why in many sides the 4-4-2 has been replaced with the 4-2-3-1.  He argues that the coming of 4-2-3-1 was a natural progression from 4-4-2, and in the last five years nearly all tactical innovations are developments of the formation.
